Oswald West State Park

Winter Hiking

Short Sand Beach

A waterfall on a rocky beach

On this day, Julia and I embarked on a memorable winter hike at Oswald West State Park in Oregon. The weather was bitterly cold, with a sharp wind that nipped at our cheeks and a relentless gray sky that cast a somber mood over the landscape. But our spirits were high, and we were eager to explore Short Sand Beach and the Cape Falcon Lookout.

Our adventure began with an easy hike from the car park to Short Sand Beach. The trail was well-maintained, and the gentle descent through the forest led us to the beach with relative ease. As we emerged from the dense trees, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of magnificent. The beach stretched out before us, its sands glistening under the overcast sky. The waves crashed against the shore with a rhythmic intensity, sending up sprays of salty mist. We took a moment to absorb the beauty of the scene, the sound of the ocean providing a soothing backdrop to our thoughts.

After walking the beach, we continued our journey towards Cape Falcon Lookout. This part of the hike proved to be far more challenging. The trail quickly became muddy, and each step required careful navigation to avoid slipping. Fallen trees blocked the path in several places, creating natural obstacles that we had to traverse. Despite the difficult conditions, we were determined to reach our destination.

A view of the ocean from a hill

The trail became even more demanding as we trudged through the mud and navigated around and over the fallen trees. Julia's determination never wavered, and her enthusiasm kept us moving forward. The cold wind added to the challenge, but our resolve was strong.

Reaching Cape Falcon Lookout was a triumph. The panoramic views from the lookout were breathtaking, the reward for our perseverance through the difficult trail. The vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean stretched out before us, with waves crashing against the rugged cliffs below. The view was a testament to nature's grandeur, and we stood in awe of the powerful beauty that surrounded us.

Despite the cold and the mud, the hike was an unforgettable experience. The challenges we faced made the rewards even sweeter, and the time spent in nature was invigorating. As we made our way back to the trailhead, the sense of accomplishment and the memories we created together warmed us from within.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that it wasn't just the destination that made this hike special, but the journey itself. The shared moments of struggle and triumph with Julia, the beauty of Short Sand Beach, and the awe-inspiring views from Cape Falcon Lookout combined to create a perfect winter adventure. Here's to many more hikes and the memories they'll bring.
