Northern European Trek

It has been a while since Julia and I have taken a big trip, but the old travel bug has bitten us once again, and we are off on a Northern European Trek. We leave lovely San Francisco for historic Boston, where we will embark on the very yar MS Veendam and cruise the Atlantic's northern reaches before disembarking at Amsterdam. The MS Veendam is a 57,092-ton, 719-ft. (219 m) long, 11-decked cruise ship with a top speed of 22 knots (41 km/h or 25 mph). We hope she is capable of dodging icebergs, as there will most likely be a few about this time of year.

On the map above of the Arctic, the red broken line is the 10-degree Celsius July isotherm, and the solid red line is the Arctic Circle. Our route has us steaming into the July isotherm area and touching the Arctic Circle before we head back south to warmer climes.

Once in Amsterdam, we will spend a few days touring the capital of the Netherlands and then begin our tour of Northern Europe.
