A Swiss Adventure

Touring and hiking

Interlaken

 Interlaken Höhematte Park

Our journey from Luzern to Interlaken began with a scenic train ride through some of the most breathtaking landscapes Switzerland has to offer. As we left the serene beauty of Lake Lucerne behind, the rolling hills and quaint Swiss villages that dotted the countryside felt like scenes from a storybook. The snow-capped peaks of the Alps gradually came into view, signaling that we were entering the heart of the Jungfrau region.

The train ride was peaceful, with Julia and I soaking in the dramatic vistas. Every turn seemed to reveal another picturesque view, from lush green valleys to the shimmering blue of the lakes. As we approached Interlaken, excitement built with the sight of the famous peaks—Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau—looming in the distance.

 Aare River

When we arrived in Interlaken, the town itself didn’t quite align with our expectations. While the surrounding mountains were awe-inspiring, the town felt overly glitzy, with upscale boutiques, flashy hotels, and a distinctly commercial atmosphere. We had hoped for a more authentic, peaceful Alpine experience, but Interlaken’s polished tourist center seemed to cater more to those seeking luxury than nature.

Determined to make the most of our afternoon, we ventured to Höhematte Park, a wide expanse of green that provided some respite from the town’s commercialized vibe. We watched paragliders soar through the sky, their colorful sails contrasting with the mountains behind them. It was a beautiful moment of calm in an otherwise overly glitzy environment.

After the park, we followed a path along the Aare River, hoping to reconnect with nature. The glacial-blue water rushed past us, crystal clear and incredibly refreshing in its purity. As we walked further from the town center, the surroundings became quieter, and the beauty of the landscape was easier to appreciate.

And then, unexpectedly, we saw a snake slithering along the path! It was a harmless one, quickly gliding along minding its own business. I have never seen Julia jump so far and so high before. We exchanged surprised glances—it was a little reminder that even amidst the more curated parts of Interlaken, nature was still very much alive and thriving.

 Jungfrau region

We ended our afternoon at a quiet café on the outskirts of town, far from the glitzy main streets. We sipped coffee and admired the view of the Jungfrau, reflecting on how the town’s polished exterior didn’t quite appeal to us, but the raw beauty of the surrounding mountains more than made up for it.

Though Interlaken itself didn’t steal our hearts, the nearby rivers, mountains, and even the unexpected wildlife added a sense of wonder to our brief visit. We left with mixed feelings but also with a deep appreciation for the natural elements that still made the town worth exploring.

Lauterbrunnen

 Lauterbrunnen

After our brief but eventful stay in Interlaken, Julia and I were ready to leave the glitzy atmosphere behind and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that Switzerland is so well-known for. Our next stop was Lauterbrunnen, a small valley town just a short train ride away from Interlaken, known for its towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and peaceful hiking trails. We were both excited to begin the next part of our journey, eager to spend a few days exploring and hiking in this quieter, more authentic corner of the Swiss Alps.

The train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen was a short but stunning ride. As we traveled deeper into the valley, the landscape transformed into something truly magical. Sheer rock faces rose on either side of us, and the sound of waterfalls echoed in the distance. The views were dramatic and raw, with mist clinging to the cliffs and the peaks of the Jungfrau region looming overhead.

 Staubbach Falls

Julia and I marveled at the beauty unfolding before us, and as the train pulled into Lauterbrunnen, we both felt a sense of peace. The town itself was small and charming, nestled at the base of the valley with quaint Swiss chalets dotting the landscape. It felt like the kind of place where time slowed down, where nature took precedence over the busier world we had left behind in Interlaken.

We checked into a cozy hotel nestled in the heart of Lauterbrunnen, with charming Alpine details that made us feel at home right away. After settling in, we set out to visit Staubbach Falls, one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of the valley.

The falls are an impressive 297 meters high, tumbling off the towering cliffs that loom over the village. As we approached, the sound of the water rushing down the sheer rock face became louder, creating a constant, soothing roar that filled the air. The closer we got, the more we could feel the fine mist carried by the wind, a refreshing touch as we stood in awe of its power and grace.

 Staubbach Falls

Staubbach Falls, with its almost ethereal quality, seemed to dance in the air as it cascaded down, dissolving into a light spray before reaching the ground. We stood there for a long time, captivated by how the water, framed by the jagged cliffs and lush green valley, flowed like a silver thread from the sky to the earth.

The trail began easily enough, but soon we reached a tunnel carved into the rock face. Entering the tunnel, the air became cooler and damp, and the sound of the waterfall reverberated around us. The tunnel opened up to a steep, rocky path that climbed upward toward the base of the falls.

As we ascended, the spray from the waterfall became more intense, and the rush of water filled the air with a thunderous roar. The path was slick from the mist, making each step a careful calculation, but the effort was well worth it. The higher we climbed, the closer we came to the cascading water, and we could feel its power more profoundly with every step.

 Staubbach Falls

When we finally reached the viewing platform at the base of the falls, the full force of Staubbach was before us—an incredible torrent of water plunging down the cliffs, crashing into the rocks below. The cool breeze generated by the force of the water enveloped us, and the mist drenched the air around us. Standing there, surrounded by the raw energy of the falls, we were humbled by the sheer scale and beauty of nature, feeling deeply connected to the rugged, untamed landscape of Lauterbrunnen.

After visiting the falls, we took a leisurely walk through the village, admiring the simplicity of life here. The air was crisp and cool, with the scent of fresh pine and wildflowers lingering on the breeze. Julia and I found ourselves immediately enchanted by the charm of Lauterbrunnen—there were no flashy shops or busy streets, just the quiet hum of life and the awe-inspiring presence of the surrounding mountains.

The weather was changing

In the days to come, we planned to hike some of the famous trails around the valley. Lauterbrunnen felt like the perfect base for all our upcoming adventures, a place where we could reconnect with nature and truly enjoy the Swiss outdoors.

The quiet beauty of Lauterbrunnen was exactly what we had hoped for. As the sun began to set behind the cliffs, casting a golden glow over the valley, Julia and I sat in our hotel watching the last light dance off the sheer cliffs. We both felt at peace, ready to spend the next few days hiking, exploring, and soaking in the serenity of this breathtaking place.
