Melbourne Exploration
Journal of Our Melbourne Exploration
St. Kilda
Great granddaughter Aubree
We started our journey in St. Kilda, a vibrant beachside suburb. The
iconic Luna Park greeted us with its whimsical entrance and amusement rides.
Walking along the foreshore, we enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The St. Kilda
Pier offered stunning views of the bay. A visit to Acland Street introduced us
to an array of delicious bakeries and cafes. We felt the bohemian charm and
strong sense of community here. St. Kilda's proximity to the beach and urban
vibe made it one of our favorites.
Port Melbourne
Next, we headed to Port Melbourne. The wide, tree-lined streets and
proximity to the beach immediately won us over. We strolled along the Bay
Street precinct, discovering chic cafes and boutique stores. The Station Pier
had an impressive presence with cruise ships docked, and we imagined ourselves
living in one of the modern apartments with sea views. The relaxed, yet
sophisticated vibe made us feel right at home. Port Melbourne's blend of
beachside living and urban sophistication also earned it a top spot on our
list.
Carlton
Carlton was our next stop, known for its European flair. Lygon
Street, the heart of "Little Italy," was bustling with authentic
Italian restaurants, gelato shops, and cozy wine bars. The Carlton Gardens and
the Royal Exhibition Building were picturesque, perfect for leisurely walks.
However, Carlton felt a bit too suburban for our taste.
Docklands
We explored Docklands, a modern waterfront precinct. The skyscrapers
and contemporary architecture contrasted with the historic suburbs we had
visited earlier. The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, offering panoramic views
of the city, and the Docklands Sunday Market are notable attractions. The area
was bustling with activity. The urban environment suggested potential for
future growth and development. However, high-rise apartment living may not suit
everyone's preferences.
Williamstown
Our final stop was Williamstown, a charming maritime village. The
heritage buildings and waterfront promenade exuded a sense of history. We
enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a waterfront cafe, watching the boats in the
marina. The botanical gardens provided a serene escape, and we explored the
historic Timeball Tower and Fort Gellibrand. However, Williamstown felt too
country for us and its proximity to an oil storage facility was a concern.
Conclusion
My granddaughter Brittany and great granddaughter Cecelia
Each neighborhood offered something unique, from the artistic flair
of St. Kilda to the modern allure of Docklands. Port Melbourne and St. Kilda
provided a serene, coastal lifestyle with urban sophistication, while Carlton
impressed us with its cultural richness. Now, the challenge is to decide which
one will become our new home. Julia and I have a lot to think about, but we're
excited about the possibilities that Melbourne has to offer.
Reflecting on Our Journey
My son Paul and his wife Vanessa
Upon reviewing our notes, we are appreciative of the diversity and
beauty found in Melbourne's neighborhoods. Each area exhibits its unique
character and appeal, making our decision both exhilarating and challenging. We
look forward to finding an ideal location within this remarkable city. However,
we have yet to determine whether relocating from the USA to Australia is the
best course of action. Time will ultimately provide clarity on this matter.
